Engineer Combat Groups, V Corps, participated in Allied Operations in
Belgium throughout the month of October.

1. From the 1st of October 1944 to 30 October 1944, The 146th Engineer Combat Battalion was assigned to the First United States Army and attached to V Corps and further attached to the 1121st Engineer Combat Group. From the 30 October 1944 to 31 October, the unit was attached to the 1171st Engineer Combat Group.
2. The battalion had no combat missions during the month of October 1944, but performed routine Engineer missions in the Corps areas, and the division area when supporting division Engineers.
a. Roads
(2) Company A, 16 October, completed laying logs for 915 yards of corduroy road running east ................
to junction with 112th Engr C. Bn., working west from bridge ..........
(3) Company C, 24 October, completed construction of culverts ..........A total of 75 feet of 12" culvert pipe
was used.
(4) Company A, 31 October, completed placing of culvert and filling in craters to road level.
b. Mines
(1) From 1 October 1944 to 24 October 1944, Company B maintained trap line of At and Ap mines east and
south of Hofen,............for the 102nd Cavalry Group on V Corps left (North) flank.
(2) Company A, 2 October 1944, checked area for mines, booby traps, etc., for tentative CP of V Corps
forward.
(3) Company C, 3 October 1944, cleared................of mines.
(12) Company C, 30 October 1944, checked tentative Battalion bivouac area for mines.
(13) Company B, 30 October 1944, constructed barb wire fortification and installing antipersonnel mines,
along 102nd Cavalry Group outpost line.................these are to be maintained for an indefinite period.
c. Bridges and Fords
(1) Company A, 4 October 1944, completed one way, CL 40, 15 feet, single span, bridge..........................
(2) Company C, 6 October 1944, completed strengthening bridge..............to CL 70 by adding another layer
of decking.
(3) Company B, 17 October 1944, completed construction of one way, CL 24, 15 feet, two span,
bridge..........
(4) Company C, 22 October 1944, repaired bridge decking..............
(5) Company A, 26 October 1944, removed large rocks, filled holes, and improved approaches to ford..........

d. Quarries
(1) A total of two quarries were operated by the Battalion during the period, and 2,889 yards of gravel were
produced.
e. Water Points
(1) During the month, the Battalion S-4 operated an average of two water points and produced 361,121
gallons of water.
f. Miscellaneous
(1) Two (2) officers, thirty-eight (38) EM with three (3) vehicles on DS to V Corps headquarters, as
provisional MP detail from 1 October 1944, to 24 October 1944.
(2) Provisional truck platoon of nine (9) vehicles and eighteen (18) EM, transporting 4th Division troops
from 4 October 1944 to 5 October 1944.
(3) Training Detachment of two (2) officers, Twenty-seven (27) EM, and four (4) vehicles on DS to 86th
Heavy Pontoon Battalion,...........for river crossing training from 11 October 1944, to 16 October 1944.
(4) A second training detachment of two (2) officers , thirty-two (32) EM, and four (4) vehicles on DS to 86th
Heavy Pontoon Battalion.............for river crossing training from 17 October 1944 to 22 October 1944
h. Divisional Support Missions
(1) From (1) October 1944, for indefinite period, Company B attached to 102nd Cavalry Rcn. Group for
General Engineer work.
(2) From 11 October 1944, Company C furnished support to......., 4th Division.
i. Demolition of Pillboxes
(1) Company B experimented with methods of sealing pillboxes by use of Thermite grenades.
Experiments were successful in fusing the embrasure door, but were unsuccessful in sealing the
rear entrance door.
(2) Company B destroyed 32 pillboxes and observation posts in the vicinity of Hofen during the month.
